In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, it’s been really eye-opening how the beauty and fashion community comes together to donate time, money and resources to help others in need.

The impact of unexpected natural disasters and hard times can be overwhelming.  It is heart-warming to know that kind hearts are out there in the world so willing to give back and share.

If you have items that are sitting around and in need of a good home, make someone feel beautiful by donating!  Here are some things to keep in mind when handing over your items and some places to check out:

  • The first thing you need to keep in mind is that each place is going to have individual guidelines.  Before you haul your goods down, do some research and give them a phone call ahead of time to make sure that the items you’re bringing can be accepted and used in that particular place.
  • Remember that a lot of places aren’t going to take used beauty items, even if it’s something such as a barely used skin care cream in a pot or a mascara that was just swiped once.
  • Please make sure all items are useable and clean.  It only takes a few seconds to double check and fold things nicely.
  • Check out local women’s shelters, homeless shelters and websites like The Princess Project (USA), Give and Makeup (UK) and Excess Access for ideas on what can be used and what is needed in your area.

Also, while you’re out shopping, please keep these brands in mind as they are donating portions of their sales to special causes:

  • Miracle Skin Transformer is donating $5.00 from the sale of each Lip Rewind in the shade LOVE.  This donation will go towards the Children’s Action Network’s efforts to find loving families for waiting foster children.
  • Beautisol will donate $5 to the Red Cross for each purchase over $20. Use code: FIVE4SANDY. No donation cap! Expires 11/23/12. (Disclosure: Sinead Norenius, Beautisol founder, is also one of iFabbo’s founders.)
  • Kiehl’s is donating 100% of their net profits (up to $200,000) from the worldwide sales of Limited Edition Creme de Corps, benefiting children’s charities around the world.
  • LUSH has once again released the Limited Edition Charity Pot Body Lotion, where 100% of the proceeds will go to grassroots charities.

Head over to Elle.com for more brands helping others in need.

If you’re unsure where to donate your beauty and fashion items, you can always check with local shelters or on websites such as freecycle.org.  And, when in doubt, you can always donate your time or money to the Red Cross, where they are currently helping the people affected by Sandy.

How have you helped someone in need, whether they were affected by tragedy or were simply down on their luck?
